CLUB POSITIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED

SPOTTED AT THE FIRST MEETING

UPCOMING SPEAKERS

May 6th : David and Sue Williams

Dave and Sue set sail for the North Atlantic in a 37-foot sailboat. They wanted to realize their dream of sailing. Their story is of an improbable adventure on the high seas and the profound realization that there was no gift more precious than the liberty to chart ones course.  Risk is a good thing ... sometimes at least.

June 3rd: Peter Jennings

Peter writes non fiction books that inspire readers to seek the advantages that life offers. His books have received wide acclaim. Two of them are:  Shark Attack – An amazing story of survival and Why Being Happy Matters Discover how the power of joy will energize your life.

HOSPITALITY

The Hospitality Team is very excited and looking forward to bringing you coffee and a light snack during the break each month.

We ask every member to support us one month each year, by signing up to supply food, help set up, and clean up. Thank you very much in advance.

SURVIVING SELF-ISOLATION

Smiling (even fake-smiling) is good for you!

You’ve probably heard that smiling can positively affect your mood, right? Well there’s research to confirm that something as simple as a smile can impact how you feel, a real fake it til you make it success story:

A study published in the journal Psychological Science in November found that people who smiled after engaging in stress-inducing tasks showed a greater reduction in heart rate than people who maintained a neutral facial expression.

A reduced heart rate means lower stress and anxiety, both of which we would all like to feel less than more. It also turns out that even a fake smile can have significant benefits, although studies have shown that when you actually find something to smile about, they are greater.

Take the challenge and find out for yourself at the link below:

Newsletter February 2020

The startup committee for Probus Club of Bobcaygeon, Marilyn, Kent, Richard, Paul, and I,

have been working very hard over the past few months with experienced members of Probus Ontario and Fenelon Falls Probus Club.  We are happy to announce that we have an operational framework in place, secured a venue, our email is up and running; online payment options are in the works, the website has gone live and we’re ready to register members and form work teams.

As a team, we decided to embrace Probus Canada’s mission statement “to provide Fellowship, Friendship and Fun for men and women in their retirement and semi-retirement years” as a guiding principle to nurture our goal to create an inclusive, equitable atmosphere that stimulates thought, interest and participation in activities.

Probus is a volunteer driven organization, and as such the success of any club rests with the culture and participation of its members. The Startup Team has done the groundwork to build a solid framework and culture that we believe are accessible, equitable and sustainable into the future. Now all we need are active, engaged members to share in creating activities and events that are thought provoking, inspiring and engaging.  After all, we believe at this stage of life ‘it’s all about fellowship and fun’!

Interest in our club has been outstanding. Through word of mouth alone, the message of a Probus Club opening in Bobcaygeon has spread and our waitlist has grown to around 200 people. A majority of our waitlist are persons who have either been on the Fenelon Falls Waitlist for a very long time, and/or those who attended the November 2019 Meet & Greet Meeting held at the community center in Fenelon Falls.

We dedicated many hours searching for a venue that would meet our Club needs. However, the options within close proximity to Bobcaygeon were either too small or didn’t have appropriate facilities.  Locations that could accommodate our waitlist numbers were either too far out of town, or too expensive for our budget. With limited venue options, we had to make some hard decisions.

After many long discussions and in consultation with Probus Ontario, we had to make a very hard decision; we are limiting membership enrollment to 150 people, and will cap the waitlist at 50 people.

To ensure fairness to all we felt it was necessary to offer registration 2 in phases. We implemented a waitlist management strategy that we believe stays true to our guiding principles of inclusiveness and equity.

If you are in:

Phase 1:  your name was on the original list of names transferred from Fenelon Falls Probus Club and/or you attended the November 2019 Meet & Greet.

Registration: you will be allowed a 48-hour window of opportunity for early online registration and payment prior to our meeting

Phase 2: your name was put on the waitlist after November 4, 2019

Registration: You will receive an email announcing the number of remaining spaces and that you may now register/pay for membership. Spots will be limited and held by RSVP response on a first come first serve basis up to capacity.

Over the next two weeks everyone will receive an email which will provide details for your registration, payment options and the time and location for our First Meeting.

In order to arrange for refreshments and name tags, we ask that you reply to your email RSVP with your intent to attend and register at the meeting on March 4, 2020

We are looking forward to meeting you

Kind regards

Terry, Kent, Paul, Marilyn & Rick
